Slightly Problematic Beloved Children’s Book

This was your favorite book as a kid and now you want to read it to your kids, but there’s just a few problems with it. Can you get over it? Can you delicately explain that the drawings were insensitive caricatures?

The messaging is so nice and warm and lovely, except for the outdated gender stereotypes. That’s not really how a mother should be treated. And there’s no good answer for where the dad is.

Also, there’s a lot of references to the Soviets that you’ll just have to gloss over.
